What makes the Stingray bass special?
Music Man Stingrays are legendary for their aggressive sound, versatile active preamp, and high-quality construction from the Music Man USA factory. Their approach to neck finishes sets them apart from other brands too, using only a light veneer of gunstock oil over an otherwise unfinished neck – it’s really unlike anything else to play!
Is a 2-band EQ or 3-band EQ better?
A hotly debated topic, with staunch defenders on both sides. The 2-band EQ is the original preamp design that vintage 1976 Stringrays launched with, and comes with bass and treble tone control, along with master volume. The 3-band EQ has bass, mid, and treble tone controls alongside the master volume.
For many, the 2-EQ models have a warmth and strong low-end than the 3-EQs, and sound more characteristically ‘Stingray’ to diehard tonechasers, likely down to the smaller array of tone-sculpting options. The 3-EQ models are generally more versatile and capable of dialing in a wider range of sounds, thanks to the added mid control.

What style of music do Stingrays excel at?
Music Man Stingrays became the holy grail for slap bass tone and punchy funk and disco music the moment it landed in the late 70s. Since then Stingrays have made appearances across all genres, but are relied upon for their ability to cut through mixes with thunderous bass and glassy trebles – all thanks to that powerful preamp.
What’s the difference between a Stingray and Sabre bass?
The Music Man Sabre is a pretty rare addition in the Music Man bass family, but we’re actually massive fans of them. Sabres take versatility to a whole new level, adding a second humbucker pickup, alongside a five-way pickup switch that adjusts the active pickup and whether they are coil-tapped or not.
The Sabre also has a slightly different neck profile, which changes the playing feel quite a bit. They’re incredible basses, and we are always excited to them come through the doors at BassBros.
